Yes, keyword research is probably the most important factor in SEO

you always want to start with keywords that are easy to get rank for, but still get some traffic

the best way to find out how hard it really is to rank for a keyword is to use a tool such as SEOfox and see how many back links your competitions have (specifically yahoos link count), that's what I've found to work good

Yeah, a site I own gets a few hundred visitors from image search. That's pretty neat! The “ranking fast” thing is really something that is important too. Install a blog, update the ping lists and add all in one seo, google xml sitemap plug-ins and it's really likely you'll at least index your new site. Then keep building links to it =)

However, there are many places to submit your press release for free, which is what I recommend if you have a very small advertising budget. The only exception is that you really should pay to upgrade your prweb release, if you can afford it.
